Description

This hearty Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting dish featuring layers of seasoned ground beef, creamy sauce, thinly sliced potatoes, and melted cheddar cheese. It’s an easy-to-make, one-pan meal that’s perfect for feeding the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 cups milk, divided

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • 45 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.

  • Season the beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.

  • In a separate saucepan, whisk together 1 ½ cups of milk and flour. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens (about 4–5 minutes).

  • Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the remaining ½ cup of milk. Set aside.

  • In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes and onions.

  • Spread half of the cooked ground beef over the potato and onion layer.

  • Pour half of the milk and flour mixture over the meat layer. Repeat the layers, finishing with the milk mixture on top.

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.

  • After 45 minutes, remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  • Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a creamier texture, you can use half-and-half or heavy cream instead of milk.

  • If you prefer a crunchy topping, broil the dish for a few minutes after the cheese has melted to give it a golden finish.

  • Make sure to slice the potatoes thinly for even cooking.
