Description

This comforting Amish Hamburger Steak Bake combines seasoned ground beef patties with tender layers of potatoes and onions, all smothered in a creamy gravy and topped with melted cheddar cheese. It’s a hearty, one-dish meal that’s perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups milk, divided
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 45 medium Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Season and Form Patties: In a large bowl, season the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form the seasoned beef into patties.
  3. Brown the Patties: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the patties on both sides until they are fully cooked. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and the flour until smooth. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a gravy. Remove from heat.
  5. Layer the Ingredients: In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes and onions. Place the browned patties on top, followed by the remaining potatoes and onions.
  6. Pour Gravy: Pour the gravy evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
  8. Add Cheese and Bake: Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Serve: Allow the dish to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy the comforting flavors of this hearty bake!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute the milk with half-and-half or heavy cream.
  • Add a pinch of paprika or cayenne pepper to the gravy for a bit of heat.
