Ingredients
Scale
Beef and Broccoli
- 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 4 cups fresh broccoli florets, bite-sized
Sauce
- 1/3 cup soy sauce (or tamari/coconut aminos for gluten-free)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1/4 cup water or broth (to mix with cornstarch)
Other
- 1–2 tablespoons cooking oil (vegetable or neutral oil)
- Optional: Sriracha or crushed red pepper flakes for spice
- Optional garnish: freshly chopped green onions, toasted sesame seeds
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients: Slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness. Rinse and chop the broccoli into bite-sized florets. Mince fresh garlic and ginger to enhance the sauce’s flavor.
- Make the Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar or honey, minced garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and cornstarch mixed with water until smooth and glossy.
- Cook the Beef: Heat oil in a hot skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Stir-fry the beef strips quickly until browned but still juicy. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside to prevent overcooking.
- Stir-Fry the Broccoli: In the same pan, add broccoli florets and a splash of water or broth. Cover the pan and steam the broccoli until bright green and just tender, maintaining its crisp texture.
- Combine and Thicken: Return the beef to the pan with the broccoli. Pour in the prepared sauce and cook while stirring continuously until the sauce thickens and evenly coats the beef and broccoli.
- Serve: Garnish with chopped green onions or toasted sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot over steamed jasmine rice, brown rice, cauliflower rice, noodles, or your preferred side.
Notes
- Slice beef thinly for quick cooking and tenderness.
- Use high heat for stir-frying to lock in flavor and get a good sear.
- Do not overcook broccoli; keep it crisp and vibrant.
- Marinate beef briefly in soy sauce for extra flavor if time permits.
- Thicken sauce with cornstarch for the perfect consistency.
- Substitute beef with chicken, tofu or seitan for dietary variations.
- Use low-sodium soy sauce for a heart-friendly version.
- Freeze leftovers in airtight containers for up to 2 months.
- Reheat gently with a splash of water to maintain sauce and broccoli quality.
