Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- For the cake, in a large bowl, sift together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, boiling water, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and black food coloring. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the cream cheese frosting, in a large bowl, beat together unsalted butter and cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until fluffy. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Frost the cooled cake with cream cheese frosting. Decorate with black and white sprinkles and fresh berries, if desired.
