Description

This Char Siu Chicken recipe brings the classic flavors of Chinese barbecue right to your kitchen. Marinated in a savory and slightly sweet sauce, the chicken is tender and flavorful, making it a perfect dish for dinner or meal prep. Garnished with green onions and toasted sesame seeds for a delicious finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • Sliced green onions, for garnish

  • Toasted sesame seeds, for garnish

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry), sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, and ground ginger. Stir to combine until the marinade is smooth.

  • Season the chicken breasts or thighs with salt and pepper, then place them in a resealable plastic bag or shallow dish.

  • Pour the marinade over the chicken and make sure it’s evenly coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or preferably overnight, for the best flavor.

  • Preheat your grill or stovetop grill pan over medium-high heat. If cooking on the stove, you can also pan-sear the chicken in a lightly oiled skillet.

  • Remove the chicken from the marinade (discard any excess marinade) and cook the chicken for about 6-8 minutes per side, or until fully cooked through and the internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C).

  • Once cooked, let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing.

  • Garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • For a more authentic flavor, you can add red food coloring to the marinade to mimic the traditional look of Char Siu.

  • Char Siu Chicken pairs well with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables.

  • If you don’t have Chinese rice wine or dry sherry, you can substitute with white wine or even chicken broth.
