Description

This Chicken Cheese Steak Sandwich is a savory, flavorful dish with thinly sliced chicken, sautéed peppers, onions, and melty provolone cheese, all nestled in a soft hoagie roll. A perfect twist on the classic Philly cheesesteak, this sandwich is customizable with optional toppings like sautéed mushrooms or pickled jalapeños!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb chicken breast or thighs, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (optional)
  • 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls
  • 4 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese)
  • Optional toppings: sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, extra onions and bell peppers

Instructions

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Add the sliced chicken and cook until fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the onion and bell pepper, and cook for an additional 5 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic, paprika, salt, pepper, oregano, and thyme, and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add soy sauce if desired, stirring well to incorporate.
  • Toast the hoagie rolls if desired.
  • Place a slice of provolone cheese on the bottom of each roll.
  • Pile the chicken mixture on top of the cheese.
  • Broil or toast for 1-2 minutes until cheese is melted.
  • Add optional toppings like sautéed mushrooms, pickled jalapeños, or extra onions and bell peppers.
  • Serve hot.

Notes

  • Serve hot with sides like fries, coleslaw, or salad.
  • Store leftover chicken mixture in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat before assembling the sandwiches.
  • Add red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicier version.
  • Use a mix of bell pepper colors for a more vibrant sandwich.
  • Replace provolone with cheddar or pepper jack for a richer flavor.
