A Southern classic, Chicken Fried Steak with Country Gravy features crispy, tender cube steaks served with a rich, creamy gravy. Perfect for a hearty meal that will satisfy everyone at the table.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken Fried Steak:

  • 4 cube steaks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

For the Country Gravy:

  • 1/4 cup pan drippings
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a shallow dish, mix together flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
  • In another dish, whisk together eggs and milk.
  • Dredge each cube steak in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat again in the flour mixture.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Fry the steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  • To make the gravy, add pan drippings to the skillet.
  • Whisk in flour and cook for about 1 minute.
  • Gradually whisk in milk until smooth and thickened.
  • Season with salt and pepper.
  • Serve the chicken fried steak with country gravy on top.

Notes

  • For extra crispy steak, make sure the oil is hot before frying.
  • The gravy can be thinned with extra milk if it becomes too thick.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add more cayenne pepper to the steak coating.
