Ingredients
Scale
- For the Stir Fry:
- 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece ginger, grated
- 1 bell pepper, sliced (optional)
- For the Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (for thickening)
- 1/4 cup water or beef broth
- For Garnish:
- 2 green onions, chopped
- Sesame seeds (optional)
- Serving:
- Cooked rice or noodles
Instructions
- Prepare the Ingredients:
- Thinly slice the beef against the grain, slice the onion, mince the garlic, and grate the ginger. Slice the bell pepper if using.
- Sear the Beef:
- In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over high heat. Add the beef slices and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until browned and cooked through. Remove the beef and set aside.
- Sauté the Vegetables:
- In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the sliced onion (and bell pepper, if using) and stir-fry until the onion is tender, about 3-4 minutes. Add minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for an additional 1 minute.
- Combine and Simmer:
- Return the cooked beef to the skillet. Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, and water or beef broth. Bring to a simmer.
- Thicken the Sauce:
- Add the cornstarch mixture to the skillet, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes.
- Finish and Serve:
- Stir in chopped green onions. Garnish with sesame seeds if desired. Serve over cooked rice or noodles.
Notes
For added flavor, marinate the beef in soy sauce, garlic, and ginger for 30 minutes before cooking. Adjust the sauce ingredients to taste for a more savory or sweet flavor.
