Description

Crispy pieces of chicken coated in a tangy and sweet lemon sauce, topped with sesame seeds and green onions. This delicious dish is perfect for a homemade Chinese takeout experience.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken:

  • 1 1/2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces

  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • Oil for frying (canola or vegetable oil)

For the Lemon Sauce:

  • 1/3 cup lemon juice

  • 1/3 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds

  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onions

  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Instructions

  • Prepare the Chicken:

    • Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper.

    • In a bowl, whisk the eggs. In another bowl, mix the flour and cornstarch.

    • Dip the chicken pieces first into the beaten eggs, then into the flour-cornstarch mixture, ensuring they are fully coated.

    • Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, fry the chicken pieces in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

  • Make the Lemon Sauce:

    • In a separate saucepan, combine the lemon juice, sugar, and water. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

    • Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the sauce has slightly thickened.

  • Combine:

    • Once the sauce is ready, pour it over the fried chicken in the skillet. Stir to coat the chicken evenly with the sauce.

    • Garnish with sesame seeds, sliced green onions, and grated lemon zest.

  • Serve:

    • Serve the Chinese Lemon Chicken hot, ideally with steamed rice or a side of vegetables.

Notes

  • For extra crunch, you can double-fry the chicken pieces by frying them once, then letting them rest for a few minutes before frying again for a few more minutes.

  • If you like a more intense lemon flavor, feel free to add more lemon zest to the sauce.
