Ingredients

Scale

For the Chocolate Cake:

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Banana Filling:

  • 3 ripe bananas, sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

For the Whipped Cream Topping:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Garnish:

  • 1/4 cup chocolate syrup
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce
  • Maraschino cherries (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. In a large bowl, beat together sugar, brown sugar, and vegetable oil. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour mixture alternately with the buttermilk. Stir in boiling water until smooth. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool completely.
  • Prepare Banana Filling: In a small bowl, combine sliced bananas with sugar and lemon juice. Let sit for about 10 minutes to allow the bananas to release their juices.
  • Make Whipped Cream: In a chilled bowl, beat heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  • Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread the banana filling evenly over the top. Place the second cake layer on top of the bananas. Frost the top and sides of the cake with whipped cream.
  • Garnish: Drizzle chocolate syrup and caramel sauce over the cake. Top with maraschino cherries if desired.
