For the Cake:
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup boiling water
For the Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
For Decoration:
- 1 cup colorful M&M’s
- Optional: Chocolate shavings or sprinkles
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in boiling water until smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating until combined. Add heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Beat until light and fluffy.
- Frost the cooled cakes with chocolate frosting, spreading evenly between layers and over the top and sides.
- Decorate with M&M’s and optional chocolate shavings or sprinkles.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider using dark cocoa powder.
- Ensure the cakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting.
