Description

Classic Chicken Cordon Bleu is a delicious and comforting dish featuring tender chicken breasts stuffed with savory ham and melty Swiss cheese, then breaded and fried or baked to golden perfection. Serve it with a creamy Dijon mustard sauce for an extra flavor boost.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Chicken Cordon Bleu:

  • 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

  • 8 thin slices ham

  • 8 thin slices Swiss cheese

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon water

  • 1 cup plain bread crumbs

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Creamy Dijon Mustard Sauce (optional):

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • 1 cup milk

  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) if baking.

  • Flatten the chicken breasts using a meat mallet to an even thickness of about 1/2 inch.

  • Season each chicken breast with salt and pepper.

  • Lay 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Swiss cheese on each chicken breast. Roll the chicken up tightly and secure with toothpicks.

  • Dredge the rolled chicken in flour, dip into the egg and water mixture, and then coat with breadcrumbs.

  • For frying: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry each chicken roll for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.

  • For baking: Place the chicken rolls on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/74°C).

  • While the chicken cooks, prepare the Dijon mustard sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the cornstarch and whisk to form a roux. Slowly whisk in the milk, followed by Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar. Simmer until thickened.

  • Serve the chicken with the creamy Dijon mustard sauce on the side.

Notes

  • If you’re short on time, the frying method is quicker, but baking results in a lighter, less greasy dish.

  • You can customize the filling by using different types of ham or cheese, like turkey or Gruyère.
