Ingredients
For the Chicken Cordon Bleu:
-
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 teaspoon black pepper
-
8 thin slices ham
-
8 thin slices Swiss cheese
-
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
-
1 egg
-
1 tablespoon water
-
1 cup plain bread crumbs
-
1/2 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Creamy Dijon Mustard Sauce (optional):
-
2 tablespoons butter
-
1 tablespoon cornstarch
-
1 cup milk
-
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
-
1 tablespoon brown sugar
-
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) if baking.
-
Flatten the chicken breasts using a meat mallet to an even thickness of about 1/2 inch.
-
Season each chicken breast with salt and pepper.
-
Lay 2 slices of ham and 2 slices of Swiss cheese on each chicken breast. Roll the chicken up tightly and secure with toothpicks.
-
Dredge the rolled chicken in flour, dip into the egg and water mixture, and then coat with breadcrumbs.
-
For frying: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry each chicken roll for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.
-
For baking: Place the chicken rolls on a baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/74°C).
-
While the chicken cooks, prepare the Dijon mustard sauce: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the cornstarch and whisk to form a roux. Slowly whisk in the milk, followed by Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and apple cider vinegar. Simmer until thickened.
-
Serve the chicken with the creamy Dijon mustard sauce on the side.
Notes
-
If you’re short on time, the frying method is quicker, but baking results in a lighter, less greasy dish.
- You can customize the filling by using different types of ham or cheese, like turkey or Gruyère.
