- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
For the Crispy Onions:
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup buttermilk

- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon paprika

- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Vegetable oil, for frying
For the Sandwich:
- 4 sandwich rolls or baguettes
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- Lettuce leaves
- Tomato slices
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak:
- Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
- Rub the steak with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Grill or cook the steak for 4-5 minutes per side, or until it reaches your desired level of doneness. Remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
- Make the Crispy Onions:
- Soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, and salt.
- Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Dredge the soaked onions in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
- Fry the onions in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Assemble the Sandwich:
- Cut the sandwich rolls or baguettes in half and lightly toast if desired.
- Spread mayonnaise and Dijon mustard on the cut sides of the rolls.
- Layer the bottom half with lettuce leaves and tomato slices.
- Add the sliced steak on top of the vegetables.
- Pile on the crispy onions.
- Top with the other half of the roll.
Notes
For a spicier kick, add a dash of hot sauce to the mayonnaise or mustard. The crispy onions can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
