- 10 oz mozzarella string cheese (10 sticks)
- 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
- 1 cup flour
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- Cayenne pepper (optional, to taste)
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
Prepare the Cheese:
- Cut each mozzarella string cheese stick into bite-sized pieces and set aside.
Set Up the Breading Station:
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until well combined.
- Prepare two additional bowls: one with flour and the other with Italian bread crumbs.
- If you want to add a little heat, mix a pinch of cayenne pepper into the flour or bread crumbs.
Bread the Cheese Bites:
- Dip each piece of cheese into the flour, then into the egg mixture, and finally into the bread crumbs. Make sure each piece is fully coated.
- Place the coated cheese bites on a plate as you finish breading them.
Heat the Oil:
- In a medium-sized skillet, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Test the oil by placing the handle of a wooden spoon into the oil. If bubbles form around it, the oil is ready.
Fry the Cheese Bites:
- Fry 5-7 pieces at a time for about 30 seconds, or until golden brown. Be sure to keep them separated to prevent sticking.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried cheese bites and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Serve:
- Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, like marinara, or enjoy them on their own!
Notes
- You can freeze the breaded cheese bites before frying to prevent them from melting too quickly in the oil.
- Add seasonings like Italian herbs, garlic powder, or Parmesan cheese to the bread crumbs for extra flavor.
