Description

Tender, marinated chicken grilled to perfection, served in warm pita bread with a refreshing tzatziki sauce, crisp vegetables, and crumbled feta. These homemade gyros bring the flavors of Greece to your table for a delicious and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For The Chicken Marinade:

  • 1 lb chicken breast, thinly sliced

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For The Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 1 cup Greek yogurt

  • ½ cucumber, grated and drained

  • 1 clove garlic, minced

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill (or mint)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For The Gyros:

  • 4 pita bread rounds
  • ½ cup chopped tomatoes

  • ½ cup sliced red onions

  • ½ cup chopped cucumber

  • ¼ cup crumbled feta cheese

  • ¼ cup chopped parsley

Instructions

  • Marinate the Chicken:

    • In a bowl, combine the olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper.

    • Add the sliced chicken breast to the bowl and toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (up to 4 hours) to marinate.

  • Make the Tzatziki Sauce:

    • In a bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, minced garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and chopped dill (or mint).

    • Stir well to combine and season with salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

  • Cook the Chicken:

    • Heat a skillet or grill pan over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken slices and cook for 6-8 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked through and golden brown on the outside.

    • Remove from heat and set aside.

  • Assemble the Gyros:

    • Warm the pita bread rounds in the oven or on a skillet for a minute or two.

    • To assemble, spread a spoonful of tzatziki sauce on each pita.

    • Top with the cooked chicken, chopped tomatoes, sliced red onions, chopped cucumber, crumbled feta cheese, and chopped parsley.

  • Serve:
    • Fold the pita over the filling and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, you can substitute grilled chicken with grilled vegetables.

  • You can also make the tzatziki sauce a day ahead for more flavor.

  • If you like, you can toast the pita bread slightly for added texture.
