Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large potato (smooth surface, cylindrical shape)
- 1 teaspoon salt (plus more for seasoning)
- Oil for frying
- Freshly ground black pepper (optional)
- Red chili powder (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Potato:
Choose a large potato with a smooth surface for easy slicing. Wash and peel the potato. - Slice the Potato:
Fill a bowl with water and place a potato slicer on top of the bowl. Thinly slice the potato across its width, ensuring that the slices drop directly into the water to prevent browning. - Rinse and Soak:
Once all the slices are in the water, wash them thoroughly 2-3 times until the water runs clear to remove excess starch. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water, mix well, and let the slices soak for 10-15 minutes. - Dry the Slices:
After soaking, remove the potato slices from the water and place them on a clean kitchen towel or paper napkins to dry. Ensure they are completely dry before frying to avoid splattering. - Heat the Oil:
Heat oil in a deep pan for frying. Once the oil is hot, reduce the flame to medium-low. - Fry the Potato Slices:
Carefully drop a batch of potato slices into the hot oil. Continuously toss the slices in the oil until they turn slightly golden and crisp. Remove the chips from the oil and drain excess oil on paper towels. - Season the Chips:
Taste the potato chips and add more salt if needed. For a spicy version, sprinkle red chili powder or freshly ground black pepper over the chips and toss to coat evenly. - Store and Serve:
Once cooled, store the chips in an airtight container or zip lock bag to maintain their crispness. Enjoy your homemade potato chips as a snack or side dish.
Notes
- Use a sharp potato slicer for thin, uniform slices that fry evenly.
- Washing the slices thoroughly removes excess starch, which helps achieve even browning.
- Ensure the slices are completely dry before frying to avoid oil splatters and ensure crispiness.
