Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 8 slices rye bread
- 8 slices Swiss cheese
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Cook the Beef:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside. - Caramelize the Onions:
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until they are soft, golden brown, and caramelized (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from the skillet and set aside with the beef. - Make the Secret Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to create the secret sauce. Adjust seasoning to taste. - Assemble the Patty Melts:
Spread the secret sauce generously on one side of each slice of rye bread.
On the other side of the bread, layer a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by a portion of the cooked ground beef, a portion of the caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with another slice of rye bread, sauce side down. - Toast the Sandwiches:
In a clean skillet over medium heat, add a small amount of butter or oil. Grill the patty melts for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. - Serve and Enjoy:
Once the patty melts are toasted and crispy, remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately. Enjoy with a side of fries, pickles, or a salad.
Notes
- For a healthier twist, you can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken.
- If you want extra flavor, add a splash of hot sauce or mustard to the secret sauce.
- For extra crispy bread, butter the outside of the bread before grilling.
