Description

This Patty Melt with a zesty, homemade secret sauce is a comforting classic with a delicious twist! Layered with juicy ground beef, caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, and a tangy secret sauce on toasted rye bread, it’s the ultimate indulgent sandwich that’s perfect for lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Cook the Beef:
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned and fully cooked. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.
  • Caramelize the Onions:
In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally until they are soft, golden brown, and caramelized (about 10-15 minutes). Remove from the skillet and set aside with the beef.
  • Make the Secret Sauce:
In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to create the secret sauce. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  • Assemble the Patty Melts:
Spread the secret sauce generously on one side of each slice of rye bread.
On the other side of the bread, layer a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by a portion of the cooked ground beef, a portion of the caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with another slice of rye bread, sauce side down.
  • Toast the Sandwiches:
In a clean skillet over medium heat, add a small amount of butter or oil. Grill the patty melts for 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
Once the patty melts are toasted and crispy, remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately. Enjoy with a side of fries, pickles, or a salad.

Notes

  • For a healthier twist, you can substitute the ground beef with ground turkey or chicken.
  • If you want extra flavor, add a splash of hot sauce or mustard to the secret sauce.
  • For extra crispy bread, butter the outside of the bread before grilling.
