Description

This German Cucumber Salad is the perfect blend of refreshing crunch and creamy tanginess. With thinly sliced cucumbers and onions, tossed in a smooth, creamy dressing made from sour cream, white vinegar, and fresh dill, it’s a great side dish for any meal. The chill time allows the flavors to meld together for a crisp and satisfying bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large cucumbers, thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried dill)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cucumbers: Peel the cucumbers (optional) and slice them very thin using a sharp knife or mandoline. Place the cucumber slices in a colander and sprinkle them with salt. Allow them to sit for 15-20 minutes to draw out excess water. Pat dry with a paper towel.
  • Make the Dressing: In a large bowl, whisk together the sour cream, white vinegar, sugar, black pepper, and chopped dill until smooth and creamy.
  • Combine the Salad: Add the drained cucumber slices and thinly sliced onions to the dressing. Toss gently to coat the cucumbers evenly with the dressing.
  • Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the salad for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. Garnish with additional dill if desired.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can add a bit of garlic or onion powder to the dressing.
  • If you prefer a less creamy version, you can replace some of the sour cream with Greek yogurt.
