Description

A quick and flavorful one-pan Sausage and Peppers Skillet combining savory Italian sausage with tender bell peppers and sweet onions. Perfect for busy weeknights, this colorful and nutritious dish is easy to prepare, packed with bold and comforting flavors, and can be customized to suit various dietary preferences.

Ingredients

Meats

  • Italian sausage: 1 pound, sliced sweet or spicy sausage links

Vegetables

  • Bell peppers: 3 medium (red, green, and yellow), sliced into thin strips
  • Onion: 1 medium yellow or white, sliced into thin strips
  • Garlic: 3 cloves, minced

Oils and Seasonings

  • Olive oil: 2 tablespoons
  • Crushed red pepper flakes: 1/4 teaspoon, optional
  • Salt: to taste
  • Black pepper: to taste

Garnish

  • Fresh herbs (parsley or basil): 2 tablespoons, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Slice the Italian sausage into bite-sized pieces and cut the bell peppers and onions into thin strips. Mince the garlic and have all ingredients ready before heating the skillet.
  2. Brown the Sausage: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sausage slices and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 6 to 8 minutes. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside, leaving the drippings behind.
  3. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add a bit more olive oil if needed and toss in the onions and bell peppers. Cook until they soften and begin to caramelize, about 8 minutes. Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Combine and Season: Return the cooked sausage to the skillet with the vegetables. Add salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes to taste. Stir everything well and cook together for 2 to 3 more minutes to blend the flavors.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Remove from heat and sprinkle fresh chopped parsley or basil on top for a vibrant finish. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use quality Italian sausage for the best flavor.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan to ensure sausage browns well; cook in batches if necessary.
  • Slowly caramelize peppers and onions to enhance their natural sweetness.
  • Adjust seasoning gradually, tasting as you go for perfect balance.
  • Add fresh herbs at the end to preserve their bright flavor.
