Description
A classic and comforting patty melt sandwich featuring juicy beef patties, caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese, and crispy toasted rye bread. This recipe balances savory, sweet, and tangy flavors for the perfect crispy yet juicy sandwich ideal for a satisfying meal at home.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Patties
- 1 lb ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
For the Sandwich
- 8 slices rye bread
- 6–8 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 large onions (yellow or white), thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp butter (for onions and toasting)
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Thinly slice the onions and cook them slowly in butter over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until they become soft, golden, and sweet. This process takes about 20-25 minutes to develop deep flavor.
- Form and Season the Patties: Combine ground beef with salt and pepper. Shape the mixture into thin, evenly sized oval patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Press gently to ensure even cooking.
- Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned on the outside and cooked through but still juicy on the inside.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Generously butter one side of each bread slice. Place a slice butter-side-down on the skillet, then layer with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, a generous spoonful of caramelized onions, another slice of cheese, and top with another bread slice butter-side-up.
- Toast Until Golden and Melted: Press down gently on the sandwich and cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes per side, flipping carefully. Continue until the bread is crisp and golden and the cheese is fully melted.
Notes
- Use fresh ground beef for juicier patties and better flavor.
- Caramelize onions slowly; rushing this step sacrifices flavor depth.
- Butter the bread generously for a golden, crispy crust.
- Press the sandwich during cooking to ensure even melting and compact texture.
- Swiss cheese is traditional, but fontina or mozzarella are great alternatives for a cheesier melt.
