  • Author: Lina
  • Total Time: 35 minutes

Description

Southern Stewed Potatoes are a comforting side dish, creamy and flavorful, perfect for pairing with meats or enjoying on their own. This hearty recipe is a classic that brings warmth to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 7 potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • A pinch of onion flakes
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water (plus more for boiling the potatoes)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons bacon grease (optional for added flavor)

Instructions

  • Prepare and Cook the Potatoes:
    • Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with enough water to rise about 2 inches above the potatoes.
    • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Reduce heat to a simmer once tender.
  • Create the Thickening Agent:
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and 1/2 cup of water until smooth. This will be your thickening agent.
  • Thicken the Potatoes:
    • Slowly pour the flour mixture into the simmering potatoes while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
    • Allow to simmer for a few minutes until thickened. Adjust thickness with additional flour or water as needed.
  • Finalize the Dish:
    • Stir in the milk and add the butter and optional bacon grease for flavor.
    • Season with salt, pepper, and onion flakes to taste. Continue simmering for about 5 minutes until heated through.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
    • Remove from heat and serve hot as a side dish or a comforting main course.

Notes

  • Flavor Variation: For extra flavor, consider adding herbs like thyme or rosemary.
  • Serving Suggestion: These stewed potatoes pair wonderfully with fried chicken or pork chops.
