Description
Southern Stewed Potatoes are a comforting side dish, creamy and flavorful, perfect for pairing with meats or enjoying on their own. This hearty recipe is a classic that brings warmth to any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 7 potatoes, peeled and cubed
- 3 tablespoons butter
- A pinch of onion flakes
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water (plus more for boiling the potatoes)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons bacon grease (optional for added flavor)
Instructions
- Prepare and Cook the Potatoes:
- Place the peeled and cubed potatoes in a large pot and cover with enough water to rise about 2 inches above the potatoes.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook until tender, about 10-15 minutes. Reduce heat to a simmer once tender.
- Create the Thickening Agent:
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and 1/2 cup of water until smooth. This will be your thickening agent.
- Thicken the Potatoes:
- Slowly pour the flour mixture into the simmering potatoes while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
- Allow to simmer for a few minutes until thickened. Adjust thickness with additional flour or water as needed.
- Finalize the Dish:
- Stir in the milk and add the butter and optional bacon grease for flavor.
- Season with salt, pepper, and onion flakes to taste. Continue simmering for about 5 minutes until heated through.
- Serve and Enjoy:
- Remove from heat and serve hot as a side dish or a comforting main course.
